Yoga in Education - practice and theory

LIVING YOGA WORKSHOP

Introduction to RYE – RESEARCH ON YOGA IN EDUCATION
Amsterdam, Sunday 11 April 2010, 10am-5pm

> BOOKING FORM   > nederlandse versie

"Research on Yoga in Education" is the implementation of simple yoga techniques adapted for the classroom to help manage the energies of pupils and teachers alike, to promote effective learning. These RYE techniques can be used from nursery to university and linked directly with educational values. The benefits of these techniques are:

  • respecting and listening to self and others
  • to grow positive thoughts and good humour
  • maintaining the health of the body and mind
  • to straighten the spine and develop correct posture
  • to learn that physical activity can lead to relaxation of body and mind
  • to develop correct breathing
  • to manage stress and regulate energy levels
  • learning to relax and rest the body and mind
  • to install periods of silence and structured rest
  • to improve receptivity to teaching and to enhance learning
  • learning to concentrate, develop visual memory and creativity
  • to raise the pleasure of learning

The day will be a mix of practice and theory and will be fun!

You will practice the essence of RYE which is learning in an active, fun but focused way – using both body and mind.

You will:

  • be practicing yoga for yourself so you will be relaxed but energized!
  • learn about the history of RYE which is now an international organization (EURYE).
  • be introduced to the theoretical basis of RYE.
  • experience the RYE techniques and the RYE method of learning

The day will be conducted by two of the Directors of RYE UK:

Kerry Gallagher has been a yoga teacher since 2003 and is also a trained secondary art teacher. She also teaches yoga to children and has a lot of experience teaching children with special needs.

Lynn Parrott has been a yoga teacher since 2000 and is also a trained primary school teacher. She teaches yoga to children, especially kindergarten.

> For more details of RYE see www.ryeuk.org.

Femmy Brug will also be on hand to introduce her work in the Netherlands and share her experience. For the past five years, Femmy has been teaching children and giving workshops to teachers to introduce yoga in the classroom, using RYE techniques. She also teaches yoga to students and lecturers at Wageningen University.

> See www.kidsyoga.nl.

The day is open to kindergarten, primary and secondary teachers and yoga teachers plus anyone working with children or parents.

Testimonials:

"RYE embedded positive techniques into my planning and practice and had a huge impact on how I taught."

"I loved the fact that RYE was based on a particularly thoughtful and reflective approach to education and focused on connecting emotionally to children."

"I was fully committed to looking at education in a holistic manner but before RYE was struggling with how I could achieve this in the mainstream education system with its overriding emphasis on academic achievement. RYE has provided an entrance point."

"I did feel that doing the RYE course made me a more competent and confident teacher. I also feel it changed children's feelings about how and what they learnt."

"…it has provided me with a fantastic insight into how to make education holistic.".

"As a trainee teacher I found the RYE foundation module extremely useful; I learnt so many practical ways of integrating beneficial techniques which I intend to imbed within my practice right at the start of my career."
