Antar Mouna Inner Silence Mental fatigue and related problems can be greatly alleviated through the practice of Antar Mouna. This teaches us to detach from our thoughts and to refrain from reacting to sensory input. Recognizing that part of our being which is a neutral witness (the drashta), that neither reacts nor judges, can have a profound effect on how we view ourselves, the world around us and to the realization of who we really are. It can give us deeper insight and understanding and guide us in our actions and decision-making. Above all, it will afford us profound peace of mind, which will lead to a meditative state. Antar Mouna belongs to a series of practices (including Yoga Nidra) that develops our ability to withdraw from the senses (pratyahara), rather like a tortoise withdraws its limbs. In Patanjali’s eightfold path to self-realisation, these practices belong to the sixth path, the dharana, during which we develop internal discipline over the mind and senses. The dharana also develops one-pointed awareness, the ability to focus on an object without being distracted.
